Thor Kitchen Range Repairs (HRD4803U)

Repairing a broken knob that is still attached.

Symptoms

Knob is loose but still attached to the valve shaft behind the control panel.
Gas valve can't be turned on or off.
Parts from behind the control panel have separated and become visible.
Igniter clicks randomly when manipulating the broken knob.

Broken Mechanism

This photo shows the black electrical switch visible through the front panel hole. The knob remains attached to the brass control shaft by way of the black cylinder that is keyed to match the brass shaft. The three bezel screws have been removed so that the bezel and knob are both pulled away from the panel to make the problem more visible.

Repair

Safety Note

Before opening any electric appliance, ensure it is switched off and unplugged – have multiple safety measures.
In the case of a built-in appliance or any where the plug is inaccessible, ensure the breaker is turned off and the device does not have power.
Verify electrical power is off by pushing in a knob and confirming no igniter "clicks" are heard, or by attempting to use other electrical features.

Opening the Control Panel

At the top, remove 5 phillips head screws behind the bull nose.
Lower the oven doors.
Remove 5 phillips head screws underneath the control panel.
Remove the left and right side trivets.
- Remove three phillips screws (two upper and one lower) for each trivet.
- Slide each trivet upward and to the side to release.
Remove one horizontal screw that was behind each trivet and with a metal tab securing the end of the control panel.
All knobs must be removed to separate the control panel from the oven.

Replacing the Spring

An approximately 4" long (relaxed) extension spring is needed.
A spring diameter up to about 1/4" (shown) can be accommodated.
Several springs can be chained together (shown).
Ensure the spring assembly is stretched/extended somewhat while the door is closed; there should always be some tension on the door.

Extension Springs (Amazon)

These springs have open loops on the end, which are easier to install, but more likely to separate.

Extension Springs (Home Depot)

Each package contains 2 qty 1/4" springs; we needed 4 qty 1/4" springs (2 packages).

We like the closed loops on the spring ends, to prevent springs from separating in the future. These are a little trickier to open up with needle nose pliers, but they should be more secure.
